How to Become a Certified MELT instructor By Christine Harmon
What is MELT?
The MELT Method is a simple self-treatment technique that people can learn to get out, and stay out, of chronic pain. This technique, created by manual therapist, exercise physiologist, and founding member of Fascia Research Society Sue Hitzmann, has helped people get back to living and enjoying pain-free lives. |
What Does a MELT Instructor Do?
MELT Instructors teach participants how to rehydrate their connective tissue, rebalance their nervous systems, and restore muscular timing. Though it may sound like a difficult undertaking, highly trained instructors guide participants, teaching them how to assess where they are carrying stress, or dehydrated tissue, in their bodies. Instructors then lead them through a series of MELT sequences, teaching them how to use balls of different sizes and densities, a soft foam roller, and resistance bands to stimulate their tissue. Participants learn to boost their own bodies’ natural healing mechanisms. They are empowered to make their own bodies work more effortlessly and efficiently, which means they feel less pain.

A Nation in Pain
According to data published in the National Institute of Health (NIH) study on pain, 25.3 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Even more staggering, the same study found that 40 million Americans suffer from severe pain. Pain can originate from a sports injury, repetitive activity, an accident, childbirth, even the flu. Sometimes the pain recedes, but for many it lingers for months or even years. This can disrupt daily life and cause people to miss work and social activities. It can also lead to depression.
Why MELT?
According to NIH, pain is a leading reason people seek out alternative wellness practices like the MELT Method. MELT can help people overcome aches and pains, as well as many of the negative effects of aging. Benefits include overcoming sleep difficulties, digestive problems, midday fatigue, bloating, and weight gain.
MELT affordable and empowering to those who suffer from pain. Instructors can hold both private and group classes, allowing people to get individualized instruction while also offering a low cost alternative to those on a budget.

How Do I Get Trained?
All instructor classes have a combination of at-home and in-class study requirements. Classes are held throughout the United States, primarily on the two coasts. All MELT Instructors start with the Hand and Foot Training. This course has a 4 week pre-training program and a 3-day in person class requirement. Instructors can continue to train in the MELT Length 1 and 2 classes. These classes focus on techniques designed to rehydrate the connective tissue and rebalance the nervous system. The NeuroStrength classes follow successful completion of the Length classes and focus on restoring the integrity and stability of the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, and core.
All classes include homework and may require participants to take tests and quizzes. Participants may also have the opportunity to upload audio recordings of their classes or portions of their classes for individual feedback.
After attaining each level of training, a certificate of completion is issued. Instructors are then given access to online Instructor Forums where they can attain marketing and educational materials. They also become members of a community where they can share information and troubleshoot ideas with Sue Hitzmann, the Master Trainers, and other instructors worldwide.
